Early Life

In Syracuse, New York, on July 3, 1962, Thomas Cruise Mapother IV entered the world. His namesake father was an electrical engineer, while his mother taught students with special needs. Tom is one of three sisters. His first cousin once removed, William Mapother, also went on to a career in acting and has acted in several films alongside Tom.

Tom Cruise’s childhood was marked by frequent relocation as his father pursued military careers across the United States and Canada. At a later time, Tom would say that his father was a violent man who frequently beat him and his brothers. Over the course of 14 years, he enrolled in 15 different educational institutions.

Tom’s goal in life was not always to become an actor. Even though he enrolled in middle school acting lessons, he was more of a sports enthusiast. After a knee injury kept him off the wrestling team in high school, he decided to pursue acting instead. Cruise threw himself into the theatre club, and soon enough he was playing the lead in their performance of Guys and Dolls.

Despite the praise and assurances that Tom has acting chops, he is uninterested. At one point he attended Cincinnati’s St. Francis Seminary in pursuit of ordination as a Franciscan priest. Because of his drinking, he was kicked out of the seminary.

In 1980, Tom earned his diploma from New Jersey’s Glen Ridge High School.

Beginning of Career

Cruise’s acting career began after he graduated from high school and came to New York. He promptly uprooted to Hollywood in pursuit of a career in television.

Tom made his film debut in the 1981 picture “Endless Love.” His performance in “Taps” the same year gained him widespread acclaim. Because of his performance in that part, Tom was soon signed by the prestigious CAA talent agency. Paula Wagner, a CAA representative, lobbied CAA managing partner Michael Ovitz on Tom’s behalf. Tom would remain a customer of CAA for the rest of his life, and in the early 1990s, he and Paula would launch their own production business, Cruise/Wagner Productions.

Tom’s “The Outsiders” increased his already considerable fame.

Success

Tom’s breakout role in the comedy/drama “Risky Business” came in 1983. In addition to spawning several cultural touchstones, Risky Business made $64 million on a budget of only $6 million. As a result of this film, Cruise was recognised as a rising star and nominated for his first Golden Globe.

With the massive success of “Top Gun” in 1986, Tom Cruise became one of the most renowned performers in the world. Top Gun was the highest-grossing film of the year with $360 million in worldwide sales.

Within the same year, he co-starred with Paul Newman in “The Color of Money.”

Cocktail” and “Rainman,” two more huge successes, were both released that same year (1988). With four Oscars, Rain Man is a true winner. A year later, for “Born on the Fourth of July,” Cruise received his first Oscar nomination.

Tom’s highest-grossing films to date are Mission: Impossible 2 (2000, with $90 million) and War of the Worlds (2005, with $70 million). Thanks to the lucrative backend points, he made $100,000,000 on EVERY movie. Tom Cruise has three entries on a list of the 10 highest actor paychecks of all time (for a single movie). In comparison to Bruce Willis’ $105 million Sixth Sense paycheck and Keanu Reeves’ $156 million Matrix paycheck, his two $100 million paychecks rank third and fourth, respectively.

Tom made $445 million from movies between 1983 and 2011. His career earnings (pay and bonuses) between 1983 and 2019 amount to $745 million, with at least $300 million coming in between 2011 and 2019.

What a Top Gun Makes in Money

We already reported that Tom Cruise made $2 million for his role in “Top Gun” from 1986. The current equivalent, after accounting for inflation, is close to $5.4 million. If you can believe it, Top Gun only cost $15 million to produce. Top Gun producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson were horrified by the box office failure of “Legend,” which starred Tom Cruise, during production. Top Gun, thankfully, was a massive financial success, topping out at $360 million in 1986 and became the year’s highest-earning film.

To jump ahead 30 years, we are now in the 2018-2019 time period. David Ellison, the son of Larry Ellison and founder of Skydance, was instrumental in getting a Top Gun sequel made after years of speculation and anticipation from fans. David Ellison, founder of Skydance and a pilot since childhood, intended to develop a Top Gun sequel even before he started the company. In the end, with everything falling into place, Skydance put up 25% of the film’s estimated $200 million budget.

The release of “Top Gun: Maverick” was pushed back from the middle of 2020 to the beginning of 2022 because of the COVID outbreak. Tom not only stars in but also largely created this sequel. While filming Top Gun: Maverick, he was paid a starting salary of $13 million. Even more importantly, Tom’s role as producer entitles him to a cut of the film’s “first dollar” earnings (10–20 percent). No other Hollywood actor or actress could get such a contract. After exhibitors (movie theatres) receive 40% of box office receipts, the studio pays out the first dollar gross before deducting any other expenses (such as marketing or production).

Given that Tom owns 10% of the first dollar revenue from Top Gun: Maverick, he would make about $60 million if the film made $1 billion. An estimated $120 million would be his share if he had a 20% stake. There is a good chance Tom will make around $200 million, which is roughly 100x his initial Top Gun pay, if he has 20% and when you consider streaming revenues in the future.
